I just looked at some pictures from an area qualifier, and the tables were set up singly, spaced out in six locations in a gym. I know that there is no mission model that touches both tables this year, but I thought that the tables had to be set up back to back. I hope no one had a robot fall off the end of the bridge!

What causes motor movement variation?

Another question to this list recently reminded me of a problem our team noticed last night. The robot's free "arm" motor is very-simply mounted on the side of the robot and direct drives various arm attachments that raise and lower.

That arm in the past (and still sometimes) moves accurately according to the typical "move .25 rotation" commands. But recently, the arm has begun SOMETIMES behaving radically differently than indicated by the rotation command.

I've read about motor vs. move blocks. And I've heard comments like "reset the rotation counter before use". I've never made a practice of explicitly resenting rotation counts on my drive wheels, and I've never seen a problem of accumulated error being discussed. Drive wheels specify movement and typically brake commands.

Consequently, I'd always assumed that when I used a move block with a rotation count, that there was an IMPLICIT reset before the action is taken. I assumed that if I said "rotate .25 rotation", that the motor would always move .25 from the current motor position at the beginning of execution of that block. If that were true, why would I need to use an explicit rotation counter reset block before motor/move blocks?

I'm beginning to wonder about the root cause of our robot arm variation. The kids use a self-written menu program to select sortes. The end of each sorte, the menu program unbreaks the arm motor. If the robot finishes one sorte with arm "up", program unlocks the arm, then team member manually rotates arm down and launches next sorte...does the manual rotation amount add up as variation "error" toward the next arm move block? This would also explain why when they run their sorte again ALONE with arm already down, that it would run correctly...Hmm...

I'm hoping one of you NXTG guru's can explain how the motor/move blocks calculate completion of the programmed rotation count. Is it counted from position at the beginning of that move blocks execution? Or is it counted from the position of the motor at completion of the previous move? Is there a difference between motor and move blocks?

Yes, Dean, this is an excellent opportunity to experiment :-). But I won' be in front of another robot for at least 24 hours, and my curiosity is eating at me.

Thanks,
Wayne

I did a search and couldn't find any previous questions about this, so...

I keep running out of memory, even though I still have over 30 or 48K left and the program I'm trying to download is much smaller than that. I reload the firmware (v1.28) and then I'm able to download the files. This has happened more than once.

For example, I've 3 programs totalling about 36K, I think I had about 48K left. I try to download a 25.5K program and I get the out of memory error. So I reload the firmware, and it now it takes all 4 programs and says I have 22.3K free, just as I'd expect.

I did have many more small programs at one time which I've deleted, but it doesn't really seem to free up the memory even though it says I have enough free space. I have no sound files, nothing else taking up memory except for the default system files.

I'm using NXT-G 2.0. Has anyone else seen this, or have a better solution than reloading the firmware?

Thanks,
Tom
