    Question updating driver station firmware

We were very excited to receive our control station kit of parts on Friday. The team went to work this morning setting up the components to enable the getting started bench top tests. One unfortunate situation arose. Our team was not able to update the firmware of the driver station. Multiple download tries. Making sure the file size was correct. Formatting and reformatting the usb thumb drive. Multiple attempts to get the firmware update process to run on the drive station. Read all the support documentation we could find. Has anyone in the beta program experienced this problem? Do we have a defective device?

I know several beta teams had trouble with certain flash drives, but all were able to find a flash drive that worked. Have you tried a different flash drives?

Did you rename the file to DSUD_PKG.BIN? I believe the name is case sensitive.

What step did it fail on, and what did you see on the screen at that time?

Here are a few of the flash drives that beta teams used successfully:
    Kingston DataTraveler ELITE, 1GB
    PNY Atache, 2GB
Western Digital 6GB Passport Pocket Drive

We tried two flash drives. We can try some more brands.
We did rename the file. I will have to check the case and make sure it is in caps.
The failure occurred at the last step, the select button. We release the select button on command do not shut down. The unit then drops to the normal display.
We will try some more usb drive brands. Let us know if you have other suggestions.

    Thanks

    Hello,

I just got my system yesterday, and was having the same problem.

    Until....

    1. Power off the driver station unit.
    2. Plug in usb device.
    3. Turn power on to the driver station unit.
    4. Do what you would normaly do to update the firmware.

    This did it for me.

From what I hear, the driver station currently requires you to have all USB devices plugged in when it boots for them to be recognized. If you plug them in after or unplug and replug them, then they won't be useable.

Cool Re: updating driver station firmware

The simpler USB sticks seem to work best. Those with multiple partitions or autobooters seem to cause problems (linux versus windows).

The Driver Station (DS) USB updater is not case sensitive...

    2GB PNY Atache worked today.

There are more tips in section 3.1.8 of the manual.

I struggled with this the better part of today. After many attempts and different flash drives, it turned out to be the file name.

Use "dsud_pkg" NOT "dsud_pkg.bin" for the file name. The documentation is wrong (in several places).

    My brain hurts already ......

The full file name should be "dsud_pkg.bin"

However, if your PC has selected under Tools -> Folder Options "Hide extensions for known file types" the file name will appear to be "dsud_pkg"
Your PC will allow you to retype the file name to be "dsud_pkg.bin", BUT the file name with hidden extensions will really be "dsud_pkg.bin.bin" and your firmware update will fail.

    I dislike hiding things...

A simple solution is to try naming the file "dsud_pkg.bin", then if that doesn't work for you, either check your Tools -> Folder Options settings, or just try renaming the file "dsud_pkg" and see if that works.
