<R78> Connection to ports
In R78 it states "External power sources of any type are not permitted on any
equipment connected to the Joystick Ports." We would like to build a device to submit for an award. To do so this device needs battery power, as the 100ma from the controller is not sufficient. Since we need only outputs from the OI can we use opto-isolators to signal our equipment. This would be tantamount to just connecting a LED to the OI. Our device would be completely separate and not electrically connected to the OI, It would just read the signals from the shielded IR LED through a tube filled with air. See diagram below:
