I recently came across a blog at schooltechnology.org that has some nice FLL-related content. Here are the "FLL Tips & Tricks" posts.

I read the last tip about software and firmware. Regarding our bricks, we have a brand new one and one that is at least a year old. Would I only want to update the older one with new firmware? Could I just assume the new one is fine?

It would always be safest to bring them both up to the same version. Indeed, the newer one may already be current - but if you use these two bricks interchangeably or as backup to one another - then avoid any subtle surprises with FW differences. Go for consistency.
