Is @Kevin O'Connor an admin? He's been active in the FRC area on this site.

I thought I tried messaging him once and if I recall correctly, he had PMs blocked. Or maybe that was someone else. I guess I can try again.

Note: Christie Davis seems to no longer be at FIRST, as that email address bounced.

Today I sent FIRST a note from their "Contact us" link at the bottom of firstinpires.org. Now would be the perfect time to do some forum maintenance and bug fixes. Let's hope this one lands in someone's inbox that can help us.

                Hi Skip et al,

These forums are cloud hosted by VBulletin and, as such, they are responsible for all maintenance and bug fixes. The issue being described regarding PDF text is a known (to us) issue that we have previously raised with VBulletin support and been told that there was nothing that could be done.

The number of posts that go to moderation is currently very small but the number of spam posts that do is very small as well so I have currently attempted to change settings such that all Registered users posting in all sub-forums are exempt from the automatic spam checking.

Kevin O'Connor Thank you for helping us!

That is a real shame about the pasting from pdf. I do see several discussions on the vbulletin forum with other users with similar issues. Some work-arounds have been suggested.

I think if we had some active moderators in here, we could help with keeping the forums clean of these broken posts. Usually what happens is the author will then reattempt to make a post and eventually figure out it was the pasting from pdf that got them. Then they try to go back and delete the incorrect posts, and all that does is leave a marker that a post has been deleted. There's no reason to keep those markers around. If you look through some of the forums, you will see these remnants all over the place. At the very least, I think the mods could help keep those out of the way as well.

I do hope that your spam-checking change will help.

I'd like to offer my services as a moderator here. There are a few other folks that have offered as well. We just want to help and keep the forums looking professional.

That didn't work. It stopped pasting after a curly single quote (sometimes called a "closing single quote")

I found a post that found changing the character encoding could help:
                          https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/foru...-cut-off/page2

They suggest changing the site to UTF-8 instead of ISO-8859-1. It might be worth looking into.

We provided that info to VBulletin the first time and it didn't seem to get us anywhere. I wasn't expecting the Spam setting change to do anything re: the single quote issue but am hoping it will help the (somewhat related issue) of people seeing their posts go into moderation for quick edits.
