  • GIA - Submission Questions

For those of you have submitted to the GIA did you use all the characters for every field. The kids are having a real hard time getting that much content but it feels like a waste of opportunity if they don't use them.

Also what did you use the 1 page document for? Did you use it just as a reference inside of the text area (eg see figure 1)? We have a CAD drawing and a photo of our product but the kids can't seem to figure out anything else to put on there.

TIA for any insight you have on these.

So you are asking for advice on how to fill out the form for the global INNOVATION award so your form will be similar to those submitted by other teams? Is that ironic?

Haha thanks for pointing that out Dean. I am more just curious as to what has been received well in the past. I am NOT someone who can advise the kids on presentation things like these (I am very analytical). What I am trying to figure out is for those that have submitted before is if a smaller, more focused statement was received well or frowned on for "lack of effort". And also what is normally expected on the supporting document as we seem to have a lot of room and that just seems odd. In other words - HELP WE ARE LOST and there are not a ton of instructions.

You've already contacted FLL and your local affiliate and they weren't forthcoming?

Leaving lots of room for little content is pretty common in FLL. Look no further than judging forms. Lots of room for comments, yet they are left surprisingly empty.

          Re: GIA - Submission Questions

          Hello Flamingos,

Last year, we used the optional supplemental page as a place to visually explain how our color-coded number system would work in our app. This was not easy to do using words alone, so it was nice to be able to provide a graphic. This year, we used the page to show the evolution of our prototype over the course of the season. You just have an 8 1/2 x 11" page, so it just allows for a few photos and captions. Hope this helps.

            Re: GIA - Submission Questions

The more you put in about your submission, the better. Last year, they used it all. We made it to the semi finals last year and saw how we should have leveraged that option more.
Each project is unique in what materials would be best. Put in whatever compliments the other portions of the application but isn't too redundant. A little redundancy is fine. If you have a prototype or finished product, be sure to clearly point that out.

Thank you both! The kids have a alpha prototype but need more funding to create a beta that could be use for real QA so they added photos into their document yesterday.
