  • Ironing the Mat

This year's mat feels like cloth. Is it cloth? Can we iron it to get the wrinkles out? Or is it just fuzzy vinyl and will melt if we try?

Why don't you try it to find out. (Just kidding.)

      Re: Ironing the Mat

This year's mat ingredient list, formulated to keep the mat well preserved and contamination free: Sodium benzoate, calcium propionate, sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite, sulfur dioxide, sodium bisulfite, potassium hydrogen sulfite, disodium EDTA, and the antioxidants BHA and BHT. Other preservatives include ethanol and methylchloroisothiazolinone.

IMHO, ironing a vinyl mat is a B A D idea. Just keeping it rolled out has worked fine for us, and is the official recommended action...

I would not recommend using an iron. If you can leave it unrolled, it will smooth out a little over time. The following is from the field setup instructions:

Pull the mat at opposite ends and massage out any waviness away from the center and re-check the requirement of Step 3. It is expected that some waviness will persist, but that should relax over time. Some teams use a hair dryer to speed the relaxation of the waviness.
Don't try to make your mat perfectly smooth. It is likely the mats at your tournament will not be perfectly smooth either. Design a robot that can work on imperfect surfaces.

The mat is more like a fabric this year. We just used some water and a sponge to wet it down. When it dried all the wrinkles were gone.
