    Motor usage (legal?)

Hello this is a question from Team 4008 concerning the legal use of a motor. The rules state the legal use of various ARA and FIRST choice. The motor we want to use came housed with the part we bought. Attached to this post are two photos comparing the motor to two FRC regulated CIM motors in size. photo 1.jpgphoto 2.jpg

As long as they comply with R18, yes.

Looking at those two pictures, this does not appear to be a genuine CIM motor. The motor rules are very specific, only the motor model numbers listed may be used. That said, the mechanical characteristics of the CIMs look quite similar to your motor. It looks possible that you could take the motor out of your "part" and put a CIM in its place to make your "part" a modified, yet legal, "part". This sort of thing is commonly done with blowers/vacuums to make a device that's not legal usable. You just need to understand the performance of the vendor's motor in comparison to the legal motor you are replacing it with. If the motors are too different, your "part" will be legal but it won't work.
